This webinar will discuss the key role risk managers play to prevent opioid-induced respiratory compromise.

This educational offering is designed specifically for the health care risk management professional responsible for risk management strategies in an acute care facility. The rate of preventable harm and death due to post-operative respiratory failure is 7.35% nationally. Risk management professionals play a key role in designing a risk management strategy that can mitigate this preventable serious safety event, improve clinical outcomes and, by reducing litigation claims, preserve financial assets for their organizations.

Objectives:

  • • Define and explain respiratory compromise, opioid induced respiratory depression, opioid-induced sedation and advancing respiratory depression, opioid stewardship.
  • • Understand the importance of improving our current Respiratory Compromise prevention paradigms.
  • • Explain the medical-legal trends and issues regarding postoperative respiratory depression claims.
  • • Describe a risk management strategy to mitigate the threat of opioid induced-respiratory compromise in a postoperative patient.

Speaker Bios

 

Denise Shope joined RCM&D in 2008 as a Risk Management Consultant and serves as a Team Leader for the firm. She has 27 years of experience in health care risk management and served on the Board of American Society for Health Care Risk Management from 2011 through 2014, and then 2018- 2020. She is ASHRM’s 2019 President. Denise is faculty for ASHRM’s ERM Certificate program and ASHRM’s Health Care Risk Management Certificate program. She holds the Designated Fellow of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management and is a Certified Professional Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM). She holds the Associate in Enterprise Risk Management designation.
