This program will be focused on the role that Risk Managers play in the work of bioethics and where they intersect and overlap.

This program will be focused on the role that Risk Managers play in the work of bioethics and where they intersect and overlap. As with risk management, bioethics has specific focus and perspective when managing complex and controversial issues, which risk managers are often involved. In many cases, the risk manager acts as the de facto ethicist. Though ethics often appears self-evident and intuitive, it has very specific perspectives and approaches that would greatly benefit the operational risk manager. There will be about 15 minutes of didactic review and the focus will be on case studies and reasoning through complex risk management issues with a bioethical perspective. There will be cases on high-risk issues, impacts of professionalism on patient safety, and a wrap-up discussion on the future of the risk-ethicist.

Objectives:

  • • Define the role Risk Managers play in the work of bioethics and where they intersect and overlap
  • • Analyze cases based on the both ethical and risk maangement perspectives
  • • Discuss how the Risk Manager can be a fully informed participant in the ethics process
