What happens when clinical experience meets legal defense?

Join us for an insightful session with Debbie, an attorney who brings a unique perspective to medical malpractice defense through her background as a Registered Nurse. With extensive experience defending physicians, hospitals, and healthcare systems—particularly in high-stakes, catastrophic injury cases—Debbie will share practical insights on risk, documentation, and liability. As her firm’s HIPAA Officer and a frequent speaker on EMR and documentation issues, this session is a must for healthcare professionals navigating today’s complex legal landscape.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize how non-clinical communications can impact malpractice cases
  2. Identify common communication risks that increase legal exposure
  3. Understand how messaging can influence case value and outcomes
  4. Apply best practices to reduce risk in emails, texts, and documentation
  5. Develop effective communication risk-reduction policies and training strategies

Speaker:

Debra Weinrich, Esq., is an attorney who practices primarily in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Before becoming a lawyer, she practiced as a Registered Nurse and has related administrative experience.  Debbie primarily focuses her legal practice on defending medical malpractice claims.  She is responsible for developing and preparing all aspects of the defense of a wide variety of individual healthcare providers as well as hospitals and multi-site healthcare systems. A large percentage of her practice involves catastrophic injuries which implicate the possibility of excess verdicts and related coverage. She is her firm’s HIPAA officer and often speaks on EMR and other documentation issues.

Adam J. Ortlieb, has practiced in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey primarily in medical malpractice matters for his entire career. He has represented a variety of medical providers, including hospitals, physician practice groups, clinics, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, and psychologists in lawsuits, board complaints, and before various regulatory agencies. His practice often involves reviewing medical records, contracts, communications, policies and procedures, and other internal hospital documents to determine whether the documents should be produced and what the impact of these documents will be on potential liability for his clients.
