Defending Obstetric Cases: Managing Medical and Legal Risks for the Best Outcomes is designed for Health Care Risk Professionals seeking to better understand and manage the complexities of obstetric medical professional liability (MPL) claims. Although OB claims are relatively infrequent, they often carry high financial exposure that can be catastrophic for organizations of any size. This webinar will explore current trends in obstetrical litigation, including the growing impact of large jury verdicts on future MPL claims. Participants will learn what makes obstetric cases uniquely challenging compared to other MPL claims, and why factors such as expert witness testimony, medical record documentation, and jury selection are critical to case outcomes. The session will also present strategies informed by OB claims data to help mitigate risk and improve defensibility in these high-stakes cases.

Speakers:

Paul Greve, Jr., has twenty years’ experience as an administrator, risk manager and attorney for major hospitals in Ohio. Paul also has twenty years’ experience in the healthcare professional liability industry as a broker and consultant.  He has worked for two health care professional liability insurance companies, including Medical Protective.  Paul has published well over 100 major articles on risk management and medical/legal topics.            He has authored chapters in medical textbooks. Paul speaks frequently on national medical malpractice trends at major insurance industry and health care industry conferences. He is highly focused on hospital and physician malpractice claim trends.

Olga Kats-Chalfant, JD, holds a Juris Doctorate and has twenty years of medical malpractice claims experience. Her prime areas of focus include all aspects of healthcare law with special concentration in medical malpractice defense. In this capacity, Olga has represented physicians, nurses, healthcare administrators, other healthcare professionals, hospitals, medical practices, as well as long-term and short-term care facilities, nursing homes and hospice. Currently at GB, she leads a team that manages matters for the largest self-insured municipal public health system. Prior to this, she managed matters related to physician groups, hospitals and long-term care accounts throughout the country.

Brant Poling, Esq., is a medical defense trial lawyer that has tried cases across the country.  He graduated from Capital University Law School in 1994.  Over the past 30 years, he has successfully taken to trial cases involving cerebral palsy, ventilator dependent quadriplegia, paraplegia, traumatic brain injury, severe burns, and wrongful death, He is licensed in Ohio, Virginia and Washington, DC.  His firm is in Columbus, Ohio and he is a member of American Legal Connections, The Defense Research Institute, Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, Best Lawyers in America and the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Christine Ringler, BSN, RN, CPPS, CPHRM, is a Patient Safety and Risk Solutions Director at Candello, a division of CRICO. Christine has extensive knowledge in medical malpractice, risk management, clinical quality, and patient safety. She has more than 10 years of clinical nursing experience in Neonatal/Pediatric ICU. Christine also worked as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant for two of the most preeminent medical malpractice law firms in Boston where she provided support in investigating MPL claims and assisted in mediations, arbitrations, and trials. Christine then transitioned to Risk Management serving as a Risk Program Manager at a large inner-city community hospital where she focused on investigation and management of serious patient safety events. Prior to joining Candello in 2022, Christine was the Regional Director of Risk Management and interim Vice President of Risk, Quality and Patient Safety at a large for-profit organization where she worked with the corporate Executive Leadership Team to develop systemwide harm reduction strategies to ensure safe, high-quality patient care throughout the organization.
