Enterprise Risk Management: Assessing risk is a critical skill that leading organizations have developed to chart strategies and make investments. Members will have the opportunity to learn about the components of an integrated enterprise risk management (ERM) program and why it is critically important that ERM be part of a health care system’s organizational structure. Panelists will talk about how their organization is integrating enterprise perspectives in assessing risk and determining overall risk tolerance from various endpoints. Panelists will share how they are employing strategies to safeguard their systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define the key components of an integrated Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program and explain their relevance within a health care system's organizational structure.  
  2. Describe how health care organizations assess risk from an enterprise perspective, including methods for determining overall risk tolerance across various endpoints.
  3. Identify strategies used by health care systems to safeguard operations through the integration of ERM principles and practices.

Speaker:

Denise Dawson, BSN, MHSA, DFASHRM, ARM, CPHRM, joined RCM&D in 2008 as a Risk Management Consultant within the Healthcare Division. She is a nationally recognized health care enterprise risk management professional with extensive health care experience, and more than 30 years specializing in risk management, regulatory compliance, quality improvement and patient safety. In her current role, Denise is Team Leader for the RCM&D/SISCO Healthcare Risk Management Consultation Services. She provides program leadership and works directly with clients to implement risk mitigation strategies in clinical and non-clinical areas across the health care enterprise. In addition, she provides comprehensive professional support services to help clients comply with new and changing regulatory requirements, evaluate emerging exposures through onsite risk assessments, navigate claims processes and develop recommendations and solutions for today’s complex risks. In addition, Denise currently leads SISCO’s Healthcare Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) service line. Denise is a former President of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM). She has also served on the Board for ASHRM for two terms. She is currently an active member of ASHRM affiliated chapters in several states. She is a faculty member for ASHRM’s ERM Certificate program and Healthcare Risk Management Certificate program. She is a contributing author to ASHRM’s ERM and Leadership Playbooks. Denise speaks nationally on several health care enterprise risk management topics.

Carolyn Bailey, B.S., CPHRM, CHSP,  is the Director of Risk Management for the Blessing Health System located in Quincy, Illinois and has held this leadership position since 2008. The Blessing Health System consists of two hospitals, two large physician groups, a number of clinics, a four-year nursing and health sciences college, a captive, a foundation, TPA service for area employers who are self-insured, a CIN, and a group of medical specialty businesses (such as a linen company, durable medical equipment, retail pharmacies, etc.) all within a tristate region. Carolyn has oversight for the Risk Management Department on behalf of all the entities within the system and helped to create and sustain the system’s Enterprise Risk Management program. Prior to Blessing, Carolyn worked in the field of Risk Management for over twenty years. Carolyn has experience in all aspects of enterprise risk management, strategic planning, process improvement, safety and security, including co-chair of the health systems Workplace Violence Prevention Committee and Employee Safety Committee, business continuity and disaster preparedness, claims and litigation, loss control, insurance and risk financing. She has presented at various conferences, podcasts and was a contributor to ASHRM’s new ERM Playbook. She is also an instructor for ASHRM’s ERM Certificate Program. She currently holds the position of Vice President of ISHRM and has recently been appointed to serve on ASHRM’s Advisory Board. She is also completing her Master’s in Management and Leadership.

 

Paulette Davidson, MBA, FACHE, CMPE, is President and CEO of Monument Health, previously Regional Health. Headquartered in Rapid City, S.D., Monument Health is a community-based health care system with a mission to make a difference, every day. Monument Health offers care in 33 medical specialties and serves 20 communities across western South Dakota and in eastern Wyoming. With over 5,200 physicians and caregivers, Monument Health is comprised of 5 hospitals, 8 specialty and surgical centers and more than 40 medical clinics and health care service centers.

With over 30 years of experience working in hospitals and physician practice environments, Davidson is a respected leader with a reputation for building great health care teams. 
Prior to joining Regional Health 3 years ago, she was with Nebraska Medicine, an academic health system where she held the role of system Chief Human Capital and Patient Experience Officer. Prior to that, Davidson was Chief Executive Officer for their Bellevue Medical Center. While at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital, in Goshen, Ind., she fulfilled several senior leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Hospital Operations. She also worked in key leadership roles at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, Ill., and Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Ill.

Davidson is a Fellow in the College of American Health Care Executives (FACHE) and Certified Member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (CMPE). She has a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Notre Dame – Mendoza College of Business in South Bend, Ind., and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin at Kenosha.

 

Jim Cotelingam is Cleveland Clinic’s Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer and is a member of the Clinic’s executive team. He leads enterprise strategy, strategic transactions, and market insights and analytics. He also oversees implementation of major strategic initiatives. Jim has developed the Clinic’s enterprise strategy, worked on M&A and other diversified business development opportunities, created local and international growth plans, and implemented new approaches to prioritize major capital investment.
Prior to coming to Cleveland Clinic, Jim was the Senior Vice President of Strategy at Trinity Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems. In that role, he was responsible for both enterprise and market-level strategy, led the development of Trinity Health’s strategic plan, and implemented key growth initiatives.
Jim was selected as one of the “Top 50 Great Health System Chief Strategy Officers” by Becker’s Hospital Review and is a member of the Society for Health Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD). Jim graduated with a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan.

 

Moderator: Michelle Hood, FAHE is executive vice president and chief operating officer of the American Hospital Association. Previously she served as president and CEO of Northern Light Health, Brewer, Maine. Northern Light is a $1.8 B integrated health care delivery system providing services across the entire state of Maine. Over her 14-year tenure in this position, she oversaw significant organic growth of the system as well as the addition of three hospitals, four skilled facilities, a home care agency, residential hospice services and numerous ground/air ambulance units to the portfolio.  As president and CEO of Northern Light, she focused on health care policy and design models at the state and national levels, positioning the system to be successful in a rapidly changing health care environment.

Before coming to the AHA, she had served on the Association’s Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. She is a past chair of the Maine Hospital Association board and has been on several community and national boards, including service as chairs of both the University of Maine System Board of Trustees and the Vizient New England Board.

Ms. Hood is a seasoned executive dedicated to the transformation of health care delivery and financing models, at both the national and local level. She brings her experience in academic, national faith-based and rural health care integrated systems to the challenges of today’s rapidly changing environment.
