After years of managing uncertainty for others, what happens when the risk to manage is your own? This interactive webinar invites retired and soon-to-retire risk management professionals to explore the personal and professional transitions that come with how the current chapter impacts the next chapter. Drawing from real-world experiences, this session will address how to redefine purpose, maintain professional identity, and apply a lifetime of skills to new opportunities, whether in mentoring, consulting, being a patient advocate, community leadership, or personal growth in approaches for managing your own senior care. Participants will engage in guided reflection and discussion to chart a meaningful “next stage” that fits their values, energy, and goals.

1. Identify core strengths and professional insights that can be repurposed beyond traditional risk management roles.
2. Explore frameworks for redefining professional purpose and personal fulfillment in retirement or semi-retirement.

Speaker:

Melanie Osley is a healthcare professional with over 40 years of experience in risk management, patient safety, quality, regulatory, performance improvement, and medical professional liability insurance (claims and risk management). Includes positions as Consultant, Manager, Director, Vice President, and Surveyor in healthcare organizations ranging in size from 100 bed community hospitals to 1000 bed metropolitan academic medical centers. Also includes physician practices, ambulatory surgery, outpatient care centers, behavioral health in- and outpatient and residential services, and correctional facilities. Focuses have included organizing processes that improve collaboration between quality improvement, patient safety, patient experience, regulatory requirements, and risk management to establish cost-effective, sustainable action plans, processes, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk, reduce incidents and adverse events, improve quality of care, and meet regulatory requirements.

Joan Porcaro joined WTW | Willis in 2022 and brings more than 30 years of experience as a healthcare risk management professional to her position. Her prior leadership roles include serving as system director of risk management and patient relations for large, multi state health systems. In these positions, she led teams of risk managers, risk management specialists, variance specialists, and patient relations coordinators supporting acute care and critical access hospitals, physician practices, urgent care, long term care, cancer treatment programs, and home health and hospice services. Earlier in her career, Joan held operational leadership roles in acute care, home health, hospice, and physician practice management.

Joan holds an R.N. and B.S.N. from St. Xavier University in Illinois and a master’s degree in management. She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) through the American Hospital Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (DFASHRM). Joan has served ASHRM in multiple leadership and supportive capacities, including participation on national board committees and state chapter boards, and as chair of the ASHRM Forum Task Force, where she and the Forum committee oversaw the development and editorial review of Forum submissions. In addition, she is an ASHRM Faculty member, contributing to the development and support of risk management professionals through committee and chapter engagement.

A frequent author and speaker for industry publications and conferences, Joan also served as an adjunct professor in the Master of Healthcare Administration program at Texas Tech University.
