ASHRM Recognizes GBMC HealthCare with Inaugural Patient Safety Award

Project demonstrates how using Lean Daily Management improves safety and reduces total patient safety incidents

CHICAGO (October 4, 2016) – The American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) has named GBMC Healthcare in Baltimore the recipient of the inaugural ASHRM Patient Safety Award - Partnering with Datix to Recognize Patient Safety Innovation.

The new award recognizes organizational excellence in patient safety and celebrates the efforts of risk management professionals in promoting patient safety across the health care enterprise.

GBMC HealthCare’s submission demonstrated how their application of Lean Daily Management principles were applied in a health care setting to improve patient safety. After GBMC adopted these change leadership methods, instances of catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) at their facilities fell by 92 percent and surgical site infections (SSI) fell by 85 percent.

GBMC also observed a reduction in readmissions rates for patients, fewer instances of missing medications, fewer employee injuries, better hand hygiene and an overall improved reported patient experience.

Lean Daily Management, also known as lean thinking, is a business approach inspired by the Toyota Production System. This approach trains employees to identify and eliminate wasted time and resources in their own jobs and to work with their peers to improve processes in order to deliver a better product or customer experience.

ASHRM Patient Safety Award - Partnering with Datix to Recognize Patient Safety Innovation was created to recognize innovations that promote patient safety as well as overall organizational excellence. The award recognizes programs that support collaboration with other providers across the continuum of care and can be replicated or adapted by other organizations.

“ASHRM works every day to promote a culture of safe and trusted health care by recognizing member efforts that make a positive impact on the health and safety of patients,” said Kim Hoarle, ASHRM executive director. “By applying management principles from other business sectors, GBMC Healthcare of Greater Baltimore demonstrated an innovative approach that lead to measurable improvements in patient safety.”

Carolyn Candiello, VP Quality and Patient Safety, accepted the award on behalf of GBMC HealthCare during the Tuesday Keynote session of ASHRM’s Annual Conference on September 27, 2016, in Orlando, Fla.
