This webinar is an opportunity to explore the roles of Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Medical Assistants, and RNs/LVNs with regards to scope of practice, liability exposures, and claims.

With the increased use and reliance on APPs, medical assistants, and nurses in the clinical setting, there are inherent and complex liability and patient safety risks that emerge. This topic allows an exploration of this issue. The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to understand the sometimes subtle differences between providers and APPs and recognize when scope of practice issues could arise. The presentation will use case examples and claims data to demonstrate how to improve patient safety and minimize liability risks pertaining to advanced practice professionals and medical assistants.

Objectives:

  • • Distinguish whether a work practice is within or outside the scope of practice/scope of service for advanced practice professionals and medical assistants.
  • • Apply your knowledge of advanced practice professional’s scope of practice to how you collaboratively work within the healthcare team.
  • • Demonstrate supervision of advanced practice professionals and medical assistants through use of protocols, job descriptions and medical record reviews.
