Next year EMTALA marks its 30th anniversary! Compliance challenges continue with several hundred deficiencies cited annually throughout the country. The financial penalties paid by US hospitals is over $3Million nationwide since 2008. This session provides a brief overview of EMTALA and a discussion of recent practice trends and cases alleging EMTALA violations. Participate in this session to gain insights into risk management strategies to mitigate exposure to EMTALA violations.

Mike is an experienced healthcare risk manager, nurse, insurance professional and attorney. He earned his JD from Fordham and is admitted to practice law in NY. Mike earned a BS from Rutgers and a Master of Public Health from UMDNJ. He has earned CPHRM designation and is a FASHRM. Mike was elected to the Board of Directors for ASHRM 2011-2013. He is an active member of the NY ASHRM chapter, where he is a Past President and current Board member. Mike is also an active member of the AHLA, the American Association of Nurse Attorneys, the ABA, the New York County Lawyers' Association, the American Association of Notaries, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Healthcare Leaders of New York. Mike has authored risk management articles, including education modules for the Nursing Spectrum Journal. He has provided risk management lectures both locally and for national audiences.
