M-08 Social Media – Do We “Like” It or Is It Insta-Trouble?

Social media is constantly changing, updating, and transforming the way people communicate. This interactive session will provide participants with the opportunity to learn and discuss social media issues in the context of litigation, after a sentinel event, and preventative measures to decrease the risk of HIPAA violations. We will also discuss how risk managers can use social media as a tool for litigation. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in group work through various fact patterns to discuss whether each situation involves a HIPAA or ethical violation and how to reduce risk in each circumstance.
M-09 Bigger, Faster, Stronger: Lessons Learned from RCA Improvement Process
Track: Clinical/Patient Safety
This session will describe our health system’s journey in improving our process around Root Cause Analysis (RCA). The session will be led by our Clinical Risk Management leadership dyad of Medical and Senior Director. This dyad is critical as it acknowledges the critical role of both physician and clinical risk (with clinical background) in setting the process up for success. Specifically, we will cover how we addressed getting the right stakeholder engaged in the process in a timely fashion (within 2 business days), and how we improved the strength of our action plans and shared learnings across the health system. Strategies regarding engagement, how to leverage data to drive process and how to drive accountability around action planning will be offered. A combination of didactic and experiential case-based panel discussion will facilitate the learning environment.

M-10 Beyond HROs: Managing Patient Safety and Risk through a Healthcare Collaborative Reliability Organization (HCRO) Model
For years healthcare organizations have studied performance improvement models proven successful in other high-consequence industries, from manufacturing to aviation to nuclear power. Why then, do we often see less-than-expected results when these strategies are emulated in healthcare? According to Lisa Ramthun and Scott Griffith, the answer lies in the challenges of translating success from one complex environment into another. Using a checklist in an airline cockpit or pulling a “stop-the-line cord” on an assembly line may appear straightforward, but within the dynamic healthcare environment, those actions may look and feel very different between the clinic, the operating room, and the emergency department. The answer lies in a deeper understanding of both the similarities and differences between industries, and our ability to understand what can be proven successful within healthcare.

M-11 Telemedicine and Telehealth: Risk Management and Regulatory Compliance Strategies

The primary goal of telemedicine services is to provide cost-effective, high-quality, efficient health care. At a time when healthcare costs are increasing, telemedicine is evolving into a more cost-effective means of providing services and improving access to care. Although telemedicine brings benefits of accessibility to medical services for patients who otherwise would not have access, the method of service delivery also presents unique risks. Identifying these risks and establishing processes for mitigating them are critical to successful telemedicine program. This session will provide a roadmap for risk managers on risk identification, risk analysis and risk mitigation strategies for telemedicine services in a variety of risk areas.

M-12 ERM: Get ready, set, GO!
Track: Healthcare Operations
This session provides an overview of Enterprise Risk Management as it applies to the healthcare industry. Course leaders begin with a summary of ERM before moving into a role-play regarding risk identification as the foundation for implementing an ERM mindset. Participants will engage the material by brainstorming risks using flow charts, financial statements, and information from other institutions. Consistent with the cross silo ERM mindset these risk identification tools will support risk identification from an enterprise perspective. Specifically the flow chart exercise will follow a patient as they receive care at a fictional acute care hospital. The facilitators will demonstrate how the results of the activities apply to organizations across the healthcare delivery spectrum.

M-13 A Guide to Understanding, Communicating, and Influencing Professional Liability Results
Track: Risk Financing
Risk managers are tasked with understanding, communicating and influencing medical professional liability (MPL) results. The complex nature of MPL risks, claims and exposure data, and program structures makes this task challenging. This session addresses two ways to enhance success with these tasks: (1) maximizing the value of the actuarial report for your organization and (2) effective use of data visualization. Communication is key to a successful actuarial analysis. We will outline the types of information that should be shared with your actuary at the onset of the review and the type of information you should expect to receive back from the report. Finally, we will provide examples of simple data visualization techniques to provide inspiration to those looking to enhance their effectiveness at evaluating trends, identifying cost drivers, highlighting areas for mitigation and intervention and communicating complex issues to senior management.

M-14 Improving Patient Safety on the Journey to Lean in Primary Care

This presentation will discuss how a physician practice group spanning across eight towns/cities on the North Shore of Massachusetts adopted a lean methodology approach for operations and process improvement. Utilizing the approach Toyota has taken through the Toyota Production System, North Shore Physicians Group has created the North Shore Production System. In daily operations and process improvement events the front line staff is empowered to develop solutions for improving their work and patient safety. When responding to trends in safety event reporting, North Shore Physicians Group convened a week long Rapid Process Improvement Work Shop to address vaccine and medication safety and a daylong Kaizen event to develop standard work for pap smear specimen labeling. Data will demonstrate that patient safety improved and safety events decreased for mislabeled pap smears and vaccine and medication events.
