Patient safety leads 2003 organizational goals
With establishment of the National Advisory Council on Patietn Safety (NACPS) and the Patient Safety Task Force, ASHRM is well prepared to realize its vision of safe and trusted health care.
The NACPS is a blue-ribbon panel of thought leaders in patient safety and risk management appointed by ASHRM President Jane McCaffrey (Forum, November-December 2002). The Council will survey the body of knowledge in patient safety from a risk management perspective and identify opportunities for applying ASHRM’s expertise.
The new Patient Safety Task Force is one of 21 steering committees and task forces that will assist the President and ASHRM board in achieving the goals established in the 2003 Strategic Plan.
A member of the 2003 board chairs each steering committee. (Task force leaders were selected from the pool of interested members who responded last fall to the call for volunteers.) Committee and task force leaders will work closely with ASHRM staff to execute the board's plans.
Here is a sampling of the committees’ and task forces’ primary objectives for 2003:
Bylaws Mandated Committee
- Professional Ethics Committee: review all potential candidates for
the ballot; consider any potential allegations of breach of the Code
of Professional Ethics and Conduct.
- Nominating Committee: elected by their peers to conduct the annual election for president-elect, board, and Nominating Committee.
- Bylaws Committee: review bylaws and, if necessary, recommend changes to ensure they are in line with current practice and direction of ASHRM.
- Finance Committee: review finances of ASHRM; work with the executive director to develop the annual budget and make recommendations to the board regarding that budget.
Risk Management Field Development Committee
- Patient Safety Fellowship Scholarship Task Force: evaluate ASHRM
scholarship candidates in accordance with established criteria.
- New Markets Advisory Task Force: identify new opportunities for ASHRM products/services to further development of risk management health care professionals.
Membership & Chapter Services
- Membership Services Task Force: develop and deploy annual
membership survey; identify ways to increase CPHRM certification
of members; plan and execute chapter leadership session and
CPHRM study session at Annual Conference.
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs): provide a listerv-based forum for members to share common interests in certain areas of health care risk management (Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, Compliance, Nursing, Patient Safety, Physicians, Post-Acute Care, Risk Financing, Rural Healthcare, Workers’ Compensation, Safety/Security).
Educational Planning
- Audio Education Task Force: plan and organize two audio
conferences on current risk management topics in 2003 and one in
2004, including faculty selection and content development.
- Barton Certificate/Modules Task Force: implement the revised curriculum of the Modules series.
- Online Education: continue building the ASHRM e-learning series on risk financing, including faculty selection and content development.
- Healthcare Risk Management Week Task Force: plan and deliver an educational event in conjunction with other Healthcare Risk Management Week offerings, June 16-20, including topic and faculty selection as well as promotion.
Publications
- Monographs Task Force: explore special current issues (such as
disclosure) in health care risk management in monographs to be
posted on the ASHRM Web site.
- Journal Task Force: solicit articles for the Journal; mentor authors; provide editorial support; plan the Journal authors’ breakfast at the Annual Conference.
- Pearls Task Force: update the Pearls for physicians; identify other issues to cover in the series.
- CPHRM Study Guide Task Force (3rd edition): update the current study guide to complement the Risk Management Handbook (4th edition) and support people who wish to take the CPHRM exam.
- Risk Management Handbook Task Force (4th edition): support promotion of the book (to be released Fall 2003).
Advocacy
- Advocacy & Representation: review and revise the ASHRM
advocacy agenda to reflect current initiatives; identify and prepare
responses to proposed legislation, regulation or practices that affect
risk management; expand the use of advocacy tools.
- JCAHO Standards Conference Task Force: develop, plan and implement a conference on new Accreditation Standards, to be held in August in Chicago.
- JCAHO Liaison Group: foster a positive working relationship with JCAHO; update ASHRM members and leaders on JCAHO activities.
Annual Conference
- Plan educational programs and networking events and select faculty
for the Nov. 2-5 conference in Nashville, TN.
Patient Safety Task Force
- Focus on emerging initiatives and expectations related to safe care
of patients; may include professional development programs and
publications.
Additional Initiatives
Also in 2003, there are also many collaborative efforts involving ASHRM and other organizations and interests. They include the Food and Drug Administration (bed safety), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), Disaster Preparedness, National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (NCC MERP), United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), Milbank Memorial Fund, CAC-MedMal, and the American Hospital Association Patient Safety Award. Volunteers (some of whom are present and past board members) keep a board steward apprised of work being done by these organizations and interests that may affect ASHRM.
Board terms extended
In 2003, ASHRM begins its extension of the board term from two years to three years.
The three-year term will reduce the number of new members to the board and improve its productivity with more consistent governance. (General membership approved this revision of the bylaws in a December 2001 election.)
The following election cycle is implementing the change:

How I renewed my CPHRM Credential
By Pamela J. Para, RN, MPH, CPHRM
Where have the last three years gone? It seems like just yesterday when I experienced my first computerized exam and then anxiously awaited the results (as one of the first 100 CPHRM recipients, my results were not available until the scoring parameters were determined). To my delight, I received a passing score!
Once the AHA Certification Center also received my passing results, they sent me a packet of information, including my certificate and a renewal application, which I proceeded to guard carefully for the next three years. In accordance with the instructions on the application, I also carefully accumulated all of the continuing education certificates that I had collected over the course of the three-year period (I did not want to take the exam again, although that is another alternative!).
Since the date on my certificate reveals that I am certified from Aug. 18, 2000, to Sept. 30, 2003, I know that I need to submit my renewal by the latter date. I also found out that when my certification is renewed, my new certificate would document that I am certified from Aug. 18, 2000, to Sept. 30, 2006, no matter when during the renewal period I renew my certification.
I proceeded to complete the renewal application. Once I completed the demographic information, I totaled the contact hours on the certificates that I had collected to make sure that I met the requirement of 45 contact hours of continuing professional education specified for CPHRM renewal. Much to my dismay, I discovered that not all of the credits provided on my certificates were reported as contact hours. What to do next? Fortunately, there is a key to calculating contact hours from other forms of credit hours in the CPHRM renewal application.
Then, I discovered that each course/presentation must be listed on the Continuing Professional Education Reporting Form found in the renewal application. Along with the title of the course/presentation and number of contact hours, the provider, date of activity, content code, and type code need to be listed on the form for each course/presentation. Content code? Type code? Once again, I turned to the instructions in the application where there are two tables, one for content codes that correspond to the six content categories of the CPHRM exam.
The other table describes six type codes corresponding to whether the course/presentation is an educational program, academic coursework, self-study or online educational program, professional speaking, academic teaching, or test item writing. Since most of my continuing education credits came from either ASHRM or chapter educational programs, most of my type codes are categorized as “1,” educational program.
Besides noting this information on the Continuing Professional Education Reporting Form, I realized that I also needed to make copies of each of my continuing education certificates to submit with my application and also note the number where the activity is listed on the form in the upper right corner of each document. This will facilitate the process of matching the certificate with the information on the form when validated by the AHA Certification Center.
The next step in the renewal process involved payment. Since I am a veteran, I recall that there is a veteran’s benefit and checked the Web site (www.gibill.va.gov/education/benefits.htm) to learn more about the benefit and eligibility to receive reimbursement. Otherwise, I will either need to pay by credit card or send a check with my application for $85 as an ASHRM member, made payable to the AHA Certification Center.
Finally, I signed the Professional Standards of Conduct statement and reviewed the following checklist to make sure that I had properly completed the renewal process:
1. Complete the application form
2. Complete the Continuing Professional Education Reporting Form
3. Attach copies of my continuing education certificates with numbers in the upper right corner corresponding to their placement on the Continuing Professional Education Reporting Form.
4. Sign the Professional Standards of Conduct statement
5. Attach my check for $85 as an ASHRM member, made payable to the AHA Certification Center
6. Sign and date the application.
If I pay by credit card, I can fax my application with attachments to the AHA Certification Center at (312) 422-4577. However, if I pay by check, I will send my completed application with required documentation to: AHA Certification Center, CPHRM Renewal, One North Franklin, Suite 2800, Chicago, IL 60606.
Before I finalized everything, I contacted Maribeth Casey, Executive Director of the AHA Certification Center, to make sure that everything was in order. She can provide renewal applications for anyone who is missing one, and she is also collecting e-mail addresses of CPHRM certificants to be able to send us messages and updates as needed. Ms. Casey can be contacted either by e-mail at mcasey@aha.org, or by phone at (312) 422-3715.
I look forward to receiving my renewed certificate and enjoying three more years using the CPHRM credential with pride!
