ASHRM LEADERS SET 2008 WORK PLAN

Task force and committee leaders met Jan. 25-26 in Chicago to identify and confirm projects for the year that will support ASHRM’s strategic goals of development, voice and impact. A complete list of ASHRM task forces and committees can be found on ASHRM’s Web site (Information section, Work Teams page). Following are some work plan highlights for 2008.

Leadership Initiative: ASHRM will add a Leadership track to the Annual Conference which will include “learning labs.” Additionally, work will begin on content and curriculum for a leadership development program.

Education: To ensure that its programs meet members’ needs, ASHRM will formally evaluate faculty, materials and course objectives through the American Council on Education (ACE). Online education offerings will grow with more on risk financing, confidentiality and a course on risk management program development.

Advocacy: The focus is on the patient, the profession and public policy consistent with ASHRM’s mission to advance safe and trusted healthcare. Topics of interest will include the impact of patient safety organizations (PSOs), implementation of the Quality and Patient Safety Act of 2005 and Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services non-payment for adverse events. Advocacy updates will be published in the Forum.

Collaboration: To enhance the organization-wide reach of healthcare risk management, ASHRM will collaborate with organizational partners, including the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for a program on e-discovery, American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) for a publication on PSO development, Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) for a “business case for patient safety” toolkit and Executive Symposium on Perioperative Safety, and others. Details will be announced in eNews and the Forum.

ASHRM Foundation: The goal is to award $53,000 in scholarships and grants. Applications will be considered following the deadlines of Feb. 15, June 13 and Sept. 1. Details can be found at www.ashrmfoundation.org.

Publications and Communication: With OB consistently among the medical specialties with the greatest exposure for liability, the current Risk Management Pearls for Obstetrics booklet will be updated. Also, monographs on alternative risk financing, data for safety and other timely issues will be published.

Membership services: New member conference calls with ASHRM leadership will be held April 15 and Sept. 9. Also, member information forums will be held March 4 and Aug. 19 in Chicago in conjunction with Barton Certificate Program modules. A membership survey will be used to gather input on priorities. Details will be announced in eNews.

PATIENT SAFETY CURRICULUM RESUMES IN JULY

Experienced patient safety practitioners go beyond the fundamentals and share the tools to apply patient safety principles in practice in ASHRM’s Patient Safety Curriculum. The two-part course will be held in July in Chicago.

Faculty members actively engage participants to collaborate in solving patient safety dilemmas. The curriculum will conclude with an interactive daylong workshop to explore how typical challenges can be overcome through solutions learned during the curriculum.

Session 1 will be held July 14-15; Session 2 on July 16-17. Tuition fees are $500 earlybird/$550 regular for members, $600 earlybird/$650 regular for non-members. Watch the ASHRM Web site (Education section, Patient Safety Curriculum page) and eNews for curriculum agendas, registration and hotel rates and other details, which will be confirmed this spring.

CONFIDENTIALITY’ ADDED TO ONLINE ED OFFERINGS

“Confidentiality” is the latest addition to ASHRM’s online education offerings.

The self-paced learning curriculum provides an overview of the fundamental concepts and issues of confidentiality and suggests ways to prevent a breach of confidentiality.

The curriculum is presented in two courses: “Introduction to Confidentiality” (available since December) and “Safeguarding Patient Privacy” (added to the curriculum in February).

A few of the “Introduction to Confidentiality” topics are:

  • The definition of confidentiality and examples of confidential information;
  • HIPAA compliance and Protected Health Information (PHI;
  • Civil and criminal penalties associated with violations of privacy standards;
  • Joint Commission Standards and Sentinel Event Policy;
  • Confidentiality issues unique to various healthcare settings.

Among “Safeguarding Patient Privacy” topics are:

  • Situations where there is a potential for breach of confidentiality;
  • Measures to minimize and/or prevent breaches and ways to mitigate them;
  • Content for staff education sessions.

Tuition is established by a contact hour rate so participants know the time commitment and credits to be earned for each course. The rate per contact hour is $99 for members and $149 for nonmembers. With 3 CEs for “Introduction,” the tuition is $297 for members. With 2 CEs for “Safeguarding,” the tuition is $198 for members.

Credits can be applied to:

  • ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) – toward credits to receive the award
  • DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) – toward credits to receive the award
  • CPHRM renewal – hours toward renewal (1 of 5 domains)

HOSTING A LOCAL CPHRM EXAM PREP COURSE

As a service to local chapters and other clients who want to support the professional development of their members or employees, ASHRM offers a locally administered CPHRM Examination Preparation Course. This is a convenient, cost-effective one-day version of the course provided by ASHRM.

The course’s overview of material corresponds to the content areas of the exam and can help test-takers focus on areas for further study or review once-familiar subjects.

Following are recommendations for planning a local CPHRM Exam Prep Course:

Pick a date: Many chapters and clients bundle the course with a regular meeting or other program. Allow three months to plan and market. Check with ASHRM to make sure that the date does not conflict with ASHRM programming.

Select the faculty: ASHRM has a roster of credentialed faculty and can help with faculty coordination.

Select a location; set the fee: The prep course requires at least eight hours. Chapter participant fee (set by the chapter) depends on the expected number of participants (typically 20-30), where it will be held, whether lunch will be served, etc.

Order the prep guide: ASHRM offers a special discount for the CPHRM Exam Prep Guide, which corresponds to the course. To minimize shipping costs, books should be ordered at least two weeks before the course. Unused books can be returned to the AHA order fulfillment vendor for credit.

Promote the chapter event: ASHRM can supply sample program brochure and a list of local ASHRM members for chapters to contact. ASHRM also promotes local chapter courses in eNews and on the ASHRM Web site.

To simplify the process, ASHRM has set a standard administration fee for chapters of $175 per person (15-person minimum) to cover all specified support. The fee for clients is $225 per person (15-person minimum). Contact Krishna Lynch at klynch@aha.org or (312) 422-3982 to receive details.

NEW CPHRMs

The Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management designation provides a credential that verifies a broad-based knowledge of risk management. Certification elevates professionals in an increasingly competitive marketplace. It is awarded based on participants meeting eligibility requirements and passing an examination.
