ASHRM FOUNDATION OFFERS PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

Have you thought about what you’re doing for yourself?

“We hope developing yourself professionally is something you have thought about and that when you think about it, you think about ASHRM,” says Pamela Popp, chair of the ASHRM Foundation Task Force.

ASHRM created the foundation in 2004 to help members and other risk management professionals advance their skills. The ASHRM Foundation is committed to awarding $25,000 in 2007 to cover or support the costs of attending a career-related educational program course or to pursue a degree.

All of these and other programs are eligible for support:

* ASHRM Patient Safety Curriculum

* Barton Certificate Program in Healthcare Risk Management

* International Center for Captive Insurance Education captive coursework

* Risk and Insurance Management Society coursework

* ASHRM chapter programs

* Advanced or undergraduate degree work in healthcare risk management, risk financing, business administration and law.

The scholarships and grants are not need-based, but instead are awarded based on the individual’s requested program and the contribution that the program will make to that person’s career in healthcare risk management.

Educational grants are made for one-time program attendance. The scholarships are for continuing educational efforts leading toward an advanced degree through an accredited institution.

Candidates must complete an application outlining their desired course or program, an explanation of how the program will enhance their career, and agree to share their educational story with ASHRM for future publications.

Research grants available, too

Additionally, the ASHRM Foundation awards research grants. The first recipient of a $10,000 research grant is Deborah F. Mulloy of the University of Massachusetts Boston-Center for Survey Research in Boston.

“ASHRM Foundation has helped to make it possible for me to evaluate the influence of the AORN Correct Site Surgery Toolkit and the Joint Commission Universal Protocol on the incidence of wrong-site surgery,” Mulloy says. “I encourage anyone who wishes to explore similar safety problems or other risk-related concerns in healthcare to apply for this grant. The application process was straightforward and the staff was helpful.”

(Research grant awardees must meet the application criteria in the areas of current employment in finance, insurance or healthcare risk management. They must also provide a financial need for funding and a letter of recommendation.)

Deadlines for 2007 awards

Applications for the scholarships and grants can be found at the ASHRM Foundation Web site (www.ashrmfoundation.org). Applications are accepted throughout the year, with designated cut-offs to allow for the awarding of the monies on a quarterly basis. Remaining 2007 education scholarships and grants deadline dates are June 29, Sept. 28 and Dec. 21. Educational grants are available up to $1,000 and scholarships are awarded up to $2,500.

 – Margaret Mead

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED FOR PATIENT SAFETY FELLOW

ASHRM’s scholarship for the Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship (PSLF) has been awarded to ASHRM member Bobbie Dietz, MHS, HRM, associate director for Patient Safety, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. She will participate in the PSLF that begins in July 2007 and runs through July 2008.

The PSLF provides opportunities for senior leaders to advance the process of creating cultures of safety and to promote breakthroughs in patient care. The focus of the PSLF is an Action Learning Project that advances the health of a community and develops leadership potential.

Dietz’s Action Learning Project is titled “Creating and Sustaining a Culture of Safety Supported by the Identification and Mitigation of Risks and Hazards at Vanderbilt Medical Center (VMC).” The objectives are to ensure that patient safety risks and hazards are identified and communicated to all levels of the organization; that mitigation activities are conducted to minimize harm to patients; and that patient safety information is communicated to staff and leadership and to appropriate external organizations.

For PSLF details, contact the Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) at (312) 422-2610 or visit www.hretfellowships.org. Next deadline is January 2008.

ASHRM each year commits up to $18,000 toward a scholarship to be awarded to a member who meets PSLF criteria and who has a commitment to the healthcare risk management profession. Scholarship candidates must be FASHRM eligible (five years membership in ASHRM) and be willing to share their Action Learning Project in the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management or at the Annual Conference.
