EXTRAORDINARY VIEWS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE

With the Pacific Ocean vista as backdrop, ASHRM will provide extraordinary views of the present and future of health care risk management during its 2006 Annual Conference & Exhibition Oct. 29-Nov. 1.

Among the notable milestones and special events in San Diego:

* More than 2,000 attendees are expected to attend, ensuring that this will be the year’s premier networking and education event for health care risk management professionals;

* The Annual Business Meeting will be transformed into “Celebrating Achievement,” a multimedia showcase for the past year’s highlights and achievers hosted by ASHRM President Peggy Martin, President-Elect Paul Smith and Executive Director Liz Summy;

* The newly updated and expanded Risk Management Handbook for Healthcare Organizations (5th edition) will make its debut;

* The revised Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management Examination will be administered on-site on Wednesday, Nov. 1, following an updated CPHRM Preparation Course Oct. 28-29 and release of an updated CPHRM Preparation Guide.

“We are looking forward to a fun and engaging celebration of ASHRM’s efforts to develop the risk management professional and promote our vision of safe and trusted health care,” Martin says.

Education opportunities. ASHRM’s 2006 Annual Conference will present 51 education sessions led by a faculty of 86 health care industry experts. Sessions will arm risk managers and patient safety officers – as well as quality managers, clinicians, insurance professionals, attorneys and other health care professionals – with information they can take away and apply at their own organizations.

Session topics are labeled according to content level – Essentials, geared to the many newer risk management professionals and those who want a refresher course, or Experienced, for risk management professionals craving in-depth analysis and study.

Additionally, sessions are organized by topic track – Enterprise Risk Management (new approaches and successful tools to effectively manage risks enterprise-wide), Claims & Litigation (trends in hospital, long-term care, physician liability, and claims management tools and techniques), Risk Financing (concepts for identifying exposures and reducing the total cost of insuring risk), Legal & Regulatory (updates on laws and regulations), Patient Safety (new approaches to improve care) and Special Topics (such as OB, rural and small facilities, psychiatric, ethical and bariatric surgery issues).

Keynotes, key achievements. General sessions this year will include an array of keynote speakers to share thought-provoking points-of-view.

  Opening keynote speaker Steve Farber on Sunday, Oct. 29, will describe the need for “Extreme Leadership.” Farber is a successful executive coach, speaker and author of the best seller The Radical Leap: A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership. (He’ll be signing copies of his book for attendees.)

ASHRM also has booked Dr. David Studdert, principal investigator of Harvard’s 2005 landmark Malpractice Insurers Medical Error Prevention Study. On Tuesday, he will share insights on how you can use information from malpractice claims, even

questionable ones, to prevent errors and manage risk.

Ira Koretsky, Wednesday morning’s closing keynote speaker, will draw from his unique business, communication and professional improvisational humor skills and show how risk managers can tell their story in a way that connects and inspires.

ASHRM’s Annual Business Meeting will be transformed into a unique general session titled “Celebrating Achievement.” All are invited to join ASHRM President Peggy Martin, the ASHRM board and distinguished colleagues Monday morning in applauding the past year’s accomplishments and glimpsing the year ahead.

Popular bookstore. Conference attendees will get the first look at ASHRM’s much-anticipated Risk Management Handbook for Health Care Organizations 5th edition. The 3-volume set (“The Essentials,” “Clinical Risk” and “Business Risk”) will include a bonus CD-ROM of downloadable tools and materials, and will be available at the on-site bookstore for a special introductory price of $299.

Also at the ASHRM bookstore, the new Risk Management Pearls on Disclosure of Adverse Events (already a best seller) will be available at a special single-copy cash-and-carry price of $15. Additional products will include risk management resources and a special selection of leadership development books.

Internet-connected computers at the adjacent cyber café will allow conference attendees to order ASHRM products online for convenient delivery back home, as well catch up on e-mail and confirm return flights.

The bookstore and cyber café will open at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, and close at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Daily hours will be posted on site.

Networking opportunities. Several networking meals and coffee breaks will be provided during the week. The gala event is the Presidents’ Reception on Sunday, Oct. 29, that immediately precedes the opening of the profession’s largest tradeshow. This year, more than 140 exhibitors – many of them new to ASHRM – will demonstrate helpful products and services Oct. 29-31.

Thanks to sponsors. Many amenities and programs are supported by sponsors including ACE Medical Risk, AIG Healthcare, Aon, Darwin Professional Underwriters, Gallagher Healthcare Insurance Services, Integro Insurance Brokers, Jardine Lloyd Thompson, Marsh Healthcare Practice, Medical Protective, Quantros, Vertical Claims Management and Willis Healthcare Practice.

Pearls booklet provides guidance on disclosure

The disclosure of adverse events, or unanticipated outcomes, is an evolving process in health care. Difficult issues center on when, how and what to say during disclosure. ASHRM shares its expertise on this important topic with the release of Risk Management Pearls on Disclosure of Adverse Events. The 44-page, easily shared pocket-sized booklet describes organizational scenarios and strategies for implementing and enhancing the practice of disclosure. Jim Conway of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement contributed the foreword. Pearls are sold in packages of five -- members: $45, non-members: $55. Order via the ASHRM Web site (Resources section, ASHRM Store page) or by phone weekdays at (800) 242-2626. Request product number 178571.

Interest Networks provide specialized information

ASHRM’s Patient Safety Interest Network and Risk Financing & Claims Administration Interest Network deliver timely content and resources tailored according to risk managers’ primary needs, whether they are focused on patient safety efforts or on traditional risk management issues of risk financing and claims administration. ASHRM members may choose to supplement their regular ASHRM membership with either or both of the ASHRM Interest Networks for an annual membership fee of $25 for each Interest Network. Join by using the ASHRM membership form and selecting the Interest Network options near the bottom. For details, visit the ASHRM Web site, e-mail ashrm@aha.org or call (312) 422-3980.

Learners set their own pace with online risk financing program

Learners can work at their own pace with ASHRM’s online education program, “Risk Financing for Risk Managers.” The program’s first course, “Fundamentals of Health Care Risk Financing,” addresses basic elements of risk financing. It explains how risk financing fits into the risk management process in an easy-to-navigate online environment with pre- and post-tests, examples of real-world risk financing situations, definition of terms, sample documents and more. The fee is $99. For program details, visit  www.carelearning.com. Click on “Courses,” then select the Risk Management category. Payments must be made by credit card to CareLearning, not to ASHRM. Call ASHRM with questions at (312) 422-3980. This program is qualified for 1.2 contact hours of continuing education credit toward ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and CPHRM renewal (Type Code: 3; Content Code: 3).

Adjustments help ensure delivery of e-News

ASHRM’s weekly e-News is a popular benefit of membership and the easiest way to stay up-to-date on risk management news, members-only products and program discounts, information on educational offerings, and more. As long as ASHRM has a current e-mail address (which members can confirm by checking the online Member Directory at www.ashrm.org), e-News is delivered to the e-mail server for that address every Friday. Increased e-mail security, however, may prevent some members from receiving this service. Members who are not receiving e-News may contact ashrm@aha.org or (312) 422-3985 for assistance.
