Task forces begin projects for 2006

Approximately 60 members gathered Jan. 14 in Chicago for ASHRM’s annual leadership development weekend. The program introduced task force leaders to the projects that they will chair in 2006 and initiated program planning for the Annual Conference. In her welcoming comments, ASHRM President Peggy Martin said, “We are very excited about the year ahead. We are counting on you to move the ASHRM agenda forward.”

The task force chairs also completed team charters to formalize the relationship between their projects and ASHRM’s board-approved 2006-2008 Strategic Plan. Martin outlined the plan’s three strategic goals: professional and leadership development (“we are a learning organization”), advocacy (“we want people to turn to us for advice”) and operational development.

2006-2008 Strategic Plan

Vision: Safe and trusted health care

Mission: To advance safe and trusted patient-centered health care delivery, ASHRM promotes proactive and innovative management of organization-wide risk

The foundation of the ASHRM strategic plan is built upon three goals, which are advanced through a variety of programs, products and services. The strategic plan recognizes that members contribute to the advancement of the profession in a number of ways. The contributions may be broad, as in an orientation toward enterprise risk, or focused on clinical risk management or risk financing and claims administration.

1. PROFESSIONAL AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: To provide education and networking opportunities and enable the pursuit of collaborative initiatives with other organizations that advance safe and trusted health care.

Educational programs. Classroom-based programs, such as the Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Program, the Patient Safety Curriculum and the CPHRM Examination Preparation Course deliver content for the newest professionals or those seeking updates on risk management principles. ASHRM’s audio conferences and online education offerings are convenient alternatives to classroom study. They meet the needs of the new and intermediate professional. Advanced learning opportunities are presented in Annual Conference or executive-style formats such as the Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship and programs with other organizations.

Publications and communication. These tools are used to support the professional development of ASHRM members. The Risk Management Handbook for Health Care Organizations and the CPHRM Examination Study Guide complement content taught in the Barton Modules and CPHRM exam prep course programs while serving as key resources for the risk management professional. The pocket-sized Pearls booklets are important reference guides for health care practitioners and administrators. The peer-reviewed Journal for Healthcare Risk Management features case studies, best practices and research in health care risk management. Connecting members with updates on ASHRM happenings is done through the bi-monthly ASHRM Forum newsletter and e-News, the Friday electronic newsletter to ASHRM members. For updated resources and information, members and non-members alike access www.ashrm.org.

2. ADVOCACY: To design and implement a responsive advocacy agenda in support of ASHRM’s vision, mission and members.

Advocacy agenda. A three-pronged approach focuses on patients, the risk management profession and public policy issues affecting patient safety, medical liability reform and technology for safe patient care. ASHRM tracks legislation, regulation and public policy initiatives as they relate to these topics and works to ensure that the risk management perspective is considered.

Membership and chapter relations. ASHRM strives to enhance individual membership experience in ASHRM by individually welcoming new members and communicating, through a variety of media, the ways in which members can benefit from the resources ASHRM provides. ASHRM also serves as a liaison for sharing information and developing chapters through a dedicated section of the Web site and by hosting the Annual Chapter Leaders Development Workshop in conjunction with the Annual Conference. As ASHRM President Peggy Martin says, “Chapters are the bedrock of this organization.”

3. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: To ensure sustainability of ASHRM by making it transparent to members and customers through open communication, serving as a financial steward, and ensuring staff effectiveness.

The stability and growth of ASHRM is supported by a strong governance body and leadership and the allocation of resources that advance the strategic goals of the organization. ASHRM is a careful steward of ASHRM resources. Through diligent budgeting and financial management, ASHRM has created the ASHRM Foundation to give back to the risk management community through educational grants, scholarships and research.

ASHRM members may choose to supplement their regular ASHRM membership with either or both of the ASHRM Interest Networks for an annual membership fee of $25 for each Interest Network. Join by using the ASHRM membership form and selecting the Interest Network options near the bottom. Online education module covers risk financing fundamentals

“Fundamentals of Health Care Risk Financing” is the first course module in ASHRM’s online education program,“Risk Financing for Risk Managers.” The course addresses elements of risk financing, including how risk financing fits into the risk management process. ASHRM’s online education program allows users to work at their own pace with pre- and post-tests, examples of real-world risk financing situations, definition of terms, sample documents and more. To take the current course, which costs $99, visit www.carelearning.com, then select “Catalog: Courses” and the Risk Management category. This program is qualified for 1.2 contact hours of continuing education credit toward ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and CPHRM renewal (Type Code: 3; Content Code: 3).

ASHRM Journal features ERM monograph

The latest issue of the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management, Vol. 25 No. 4, has been mailed to all members and is now available online to members who are registered on the ASHRM Web site. Highlights include a three-part monograph analyzing the rise in importance of enterprise risk management. To read the Journal online, ASHRM members must log in with their username and password. Members who do not have a username or password can register for them anytime. Registration is simple and requires minimal information including membership ID number. (ID numbers are printed on membership cards and mailing labels.) To register, visit www.ashrm.org and click on the Register Now! link in the Login box. With questions on registering on the site, contact ashrm@aha.org. (Note: The ERM monograph also is publicly available for a limited time on the ASHRM Web site’s Resources Section, Monographs page.)

Personalized info service is a member benefit

Need information, but don’t know where to find it? Or don’t have the time? The AHA Resource Center can help, and it’s an ASHRM member benefit. The Resource Center is a centralized source of information on a broad range of health care issues. A staff of experienced information professionals with access to a wide range of resources – books, journals, electronic databases, personal contacts and other tools – is available. The Resource Center can provide a quick fact or referral, a specific article, or more extensive research. Members receive discounted rates on these personalized information services. Contact the AHA Resource Center at (312) 422-2050, e-mail rc@aha.org or visit www.aha.org/resource.

Adjustments help ensure delivery of e-News

ASHRM’s weekly e-News is a popular benefit of membership and the easiest way to stay up-to-date on risk management news, members-only products and program discounts, information on educational offerings, and more. As long as ASHRM has a current e-mail address (which members can confirm by checking the online Member Directory at www.ashrm.org), e-News is delivered to the e-mail server for that address every Friday. Increased e-mail security, however, may prevent some members from receiving this service. Members who are not receiving e-News may contact ashrm@aha.org or (312) 422-3985 for assistance.

Education Update

Barton Modules program offers college-level courses

Registration is now open for the 2006 Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management program – “College-level learning for health care leaders.” The Essentials Module is the educational foundation for major functions needed for effective health care risk management. The Applications Module provides in-depth discussions of topics for professionals with one to five years of experience, and the Advanced Forum Module facilitates critical thinking and analysis of current issues for risk management professionals with more than five years of experience. All three modules will be offered in April and July in Chicago; Applications will be offered in October preceding the Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego. Registration information and preliminary agendas are available on the ASHRM Web site (Education section, Barton Modules page).

Patient Safety Curriculum helps hospitals keep up

As the patient safety movement continues to grow, there is added urgency for health care risk management professionals to develop new skills and understand the tools that can keep their organizations relevant in a changing world. The ASHRM Patient Safety Curriculum addresses this need through a unique series of three sequential programs. Basic Principles of Patient Safety (I) will be offered May 22 and 23 and July 10 and 11, Advanced Principles (II) will be offered May 24 and 25 and July 12 and 13, and Application of Patient Safety Principles (III) will be offered Oct. 27 and 28. For location and agenda details and to register, visit the ASHRM Web site’s Education section, Patient Safety Curriculum page.

San Diego is the setting for Annual Conference

ASHRM is heading to the scenic West Coast setting of San Diego for its 2006 Annual Conference & Exhibition. Approximately 2,000 health care risk management professionals are expected to attend the education programs, keynote sessions, networking events and exhibition at the San Diego Convention Center. The event is set for Oct. 29-Nov. 1, preceded by a CPHRM Exam Preparation Course, Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Applications Module, ASHRM Patient Safety Curriculum Session III and followed by an onsite administration of the CPHRM exam. Details will be announced in mid-May. For questions regarding sponsorships and exhibition space, contact Kristina Galloway at (312) 541-0567.

Members receive professional development trackers

A new tool to help ASHRM members keep their professional development plans on track arrived in mailboxes in January. The colorful 12-page “tracker” is a catalog of ASHRM programs and resources organized by primary member interests: enterprise risk management, patient safety and risk financing & claims administration. It also includes a program calendar for the year, provides pockets for filing program materials and certificates of completion, and a chart for recording continuing education credits earned during the course of the year. Those who have no received a tracker and would like one may contact ashrm@aha.org

Preparing for the CPHRM Exam

-  The CPHRM Examination Study Guide (3rd Edition) covers exam content in a flexible format to meet the needs of anyone who has not yet purchased a study guide or does not plan to take a CPHRM Examination Preparation Session. Content was adapted from the Risk Management Handbook for Health Care Organizations (4th Edition). Also, practice tests in the study guide correspond with the CPHRM content outline. The study guide is available for purchase at (800) 242-2626; request item 178836.

- An online tool is available for preparing for the CPHRM Exam. Created by the AHA Certification Center (the people who created the exam), the Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) simulates the actual exam in format and content. The test offers rationales for correct and incorrect options, as well as several score reports that highlight the exam topics that they scored well in and those that need improvement. For details about the SAE, contact the AHA Certification Center at (312) 422-3713.
