The Impact of Medicare Payment Changes: CMS Takes Your Questions
    (Event Code 15848)

    Wednesday, July 15, 2009

    Purchase a recording

    Program

The transformation of Medicare from a passive payer to an active purchaser of healthcare is bringing big changes in how hospitals do business. Hospitals need to understand the impact of these changes.

In its effort to preserve the Medicare Trust, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has stopped paying for certain hospital acquired conditions (HAC) documented as secondary diagnoses and not present on admission (POA). Effectively, these cases are to be paid as though the secondary diagnoses were not present. Hospitals are being required to report POA information for both primary and secondary diagnoses when submitting claims for discharges.

This is one of several non-payment strategies intended to support value based purchasing (VBP), which links payments to results, including quality, efficiency, patient satisfaction and other measures – areas of interest to healthcare risk management, quality and patient safety professionals.

This special one-hour audio conference will feature representatives of CMS who will discuss the latest on VBP as well as HAC management and prevention.

    Objectives

    • Preview Medicare policy issues related to VBP and its effect on hospitals
    • Discuss the future of the HAC provision and its impact, including updates and opportunities for involvement
    • Identify strategies for ensuring continued compliance with HAC/POA.
