Course Overview

This self-paced learning module will provide an overview of the fundamental concepts and issues of confidentiality, particularly how these issues impact risk management professionals in healthcare settings.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

  • Define confidentiality and provide examples of confidential information
  • Discuss HIPAA compliance and Protected Health Information (PHI)
  • Discuss the civil, criminal and civil monetary penalties associated with violations of privacy standards
  • Discuss the Joint Commission Standards related to privacy and confidentiality
  • Discuss the Joint Commission Sentinel Event Policy and options to maximize confidentiality of documents prepared following a sentinel event
  • Discuss authorizations requesting disclosure of protected health information and appropriate releases
  • Define a breach of confidentiality and provide examples of intentional and unintentional breaches
