Mary Anne Hilliard, BSN, Esq., CPHRM, has more than 20 years of experience as a healthcare risk management professional. She started out as a pediatric nurse in 1987 at Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C. While practicing nursing at the Catholic University Columbus School of Law, she attended law school at night. In 1992, she began practicing law at a Washington, D.C. malpractice defense firm. Although she enjoyed the work, she pined for the pace and mission of the hospital setting and in 1997 returned to CNMC as Risk Manager and Associate Counsel. She currently serves as Chief Risk Counsel and VP Safety & Patient Experience for Children's National Medical Center. In this capacity, she and her team manage the patient safety program, the clinical and financial risk programs, the insurance program, the captive company management and the workers compensation program, as well as oversee and manage all the litigation.
