Chapter Leadership Workshop

ASHRM hosts the Chapter Leadership Workshop each year on the first day of the Annual Conference & Exhibition. The workshop is an excellent source of leadership tools and information, as well as an opportunity to share experiences, ideas and solutions with fellow chapter leaders from across the country.

The program includes presentations on issues of interest to chapter leaders, such as membership recruitment and retention, finances and chapter operations, recruiting and motivating volunteers, sponsorship and educational programs and other aspects of running a successful chapter.

In addition, chapter leaders have a chance to network with other leaders, learning what issues they have in common and how other leaders and organizations have tackled these challenges.  In addition, chapter leaders can share their best practices for serving their members and the risk management profession.

All current presidents and presidents-elect are invited to attend, or they can designate a chapter representative to attend in their place.  The agenda for the workshop is planned each year by the Chapter Relations Task Force, which builds on feedback and suggestions from chapter leaders across the country.  Invitations are sent out in August.

In addition, ASHRM supports participation in the workshop through its Chapter Workshop Scholarship program, which provides funds for selected leaders attending the workshop.

Chapter Rebate Program

ASHRM’s Chapter Rebate Program offers affiliated chapters a chance to earn valuable financial incentives. For each local chapter member who joins the national organization during the yearly campaign, the chapter receives a $25 rebate.

Participation is easy – to qualify, a chapter must submit its membership roster in Word or Excel format to ASHRM by the third Friday in August.  Rebates are processed and checks mailed to chapters around the time of the Annual Conference.

Chapter members can join ASHRM by filling out an online application.  Or call ASHRM at (312) 422-3980 to receive an application.

Continuing Education Credits

As a service to its affiliated chapters, ASHRM offers processing of Continuing Education (CE) credits for chapter educational programs.

The credits apply toward the ASHRM designations of Fellow (FASHRM) and Distinguished Fellow (DFASHRM) and towards Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) renewal.

For each CE credit request, chapters are required to submit a complete program agenda; biographies for each speaker or faculty member; and contact information for the chapter representative applying for credits.  This information should be submitted to Pamela Para, director of technical services, by e-mail or fax (312) 422-4580.

Allow two weeks for requests to be processed.

Once a request is approved, chapters who wish to advertise CE credits must use approved ASHRM language on brochures, marketing materials and certificates of attendance.

Healthcare Risk Management Week

Health Care Risk Management Week was developed by ASHRM to highlight the contributions risk managers make to both healthcare consumers and providers.

Each year Risk Week takes place during the third week of June and includes a theme promoting an important aspect of safe and trusted healthcare and a special audio conference, which can serve as the basis for a chapter educational program.

ASHRM assists chapters in their HCRMW planning and promotions by developing resources such as tips for celebrating the week, sample proclamations for state and local government, four-color artwork, logo items, press release and audio conference program.

Chapters and EINs

ASHRM recommends as a best practice that affiliated chapters have a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). This requirement is in keeping with the requirements of the Association Finance department of the American Hospital Association, ASHRM's parent organization.

An EIN is a nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service  and used to identify the tax accounts of employers and certain other organizations with no employees.  For example, banks will not open an account without an EIN, and banks report to the IRS.  In addition, the IRS requires all nonprofit organizations to apply for an EIN before filing for exempt status.

In order for a chapter to participate in ASHRM benefit programs such as the Chapter Workshop Scholarship or the Chapter Rebate, or to receive other monies from ASHRM, a chapter must provide documentation for its EIN (a W-9 form or other documentation).  Forms can be faxed to ASHRM at (312) 422-4580.

If a chapter is part of a state hospital association or other entity, it would fall under the EIN of its parent organization, and a copy of that W-9 form should be supplied.

If a chapter does not have am EIN, the chapter president can supply a letter to the AHA stating that the chapter does not have an EIN.

If you have questions about this requirement, please contact ASHRM at (312) 422-3980.
