Professional Recognition Program FAQs

·    What are the benefits of the FASHRM/DFASHRM designations?

The Fellow and Distinguished Fellow designations signify a level of achievement that is earned not only through health care risk management experience and education, but also by a level of expertise that is demonstrated through health care risk management leadership, public speaking, and/or professional publication.

·    Do I ever need to renew the FASHRM/DFASHRM designation?

No, once the designation is awarded, there are no renewal obligations.

·    When the application requires "risk management (or related)" material, what does this mean?

For the purpose of this professional recognition program, 'risk management (or related)' includes any function, organization or discipline that has, as its mission or purpose, to reduce or prevent the incidence of speculative or casualty (as opposed to "business") risks for health care or health care-related organizations.

·    When the application refers to "routine job responsibility," what does this mean?

Routine job responsibility is defined as "any function, activity, task, or responsibility regularly undertaken by an employee in order to maintain employment with the employer. A 'routine job responsibility' may or may not be described in the applicant's job description. For purposes of this definition, 'employer' shall include any subsidiary or affiliated organizations of the applicant's employer. Payment of an honorarium or travel expenses by a third party may be evidence that the activity was not a routine job resposibility."

·    How can I earn continuing education credits towards meeting the requirements for the FASHRM/DFASHRM designations?

All educational programs offered by ASHRM are eligible for continuing education credits towards the FASHRM/DFASHRM designations. In addition, certificates of attendance for other programs including, but not limited to, those offered by chapters of ASHRM, insurance companies, or health care systems may qualify if they meet the following criteria:

     1.) The name of the program is on the certificate

     2.) The date of the program is on the certificate

     3.) Either the number of contact hours awarded for the program is on the certificate or calculated by the applicant and submitted with the certificate.

     4.) The content of the program is compatible with at least one of the content categories listed on the application.

·    How will I know when my application is being reviewed by the Board of Directors?

For each application that is received by ASHRM, the applicant is sent a letter by an ASHRM staff member notifying the applicant that the application has been received and what date it will be reviewed by the Board of Directors.

·    How will I find out if I have been awarded the FASHRM/DFASHRM designation?

Once the application has been reviewed and approved by the ASHRM Board of Directors, the applicant will receive a letter from the ASHRM President. Successful applicants are also announced and officially presented with the award at ASHRM's Annual Conference & Exhibition each year.

·    Under what circumstances would an application not be approved?

There could be several reasons why an application is not approved. When the application is received, an ASHRM staff member will review it for completeness. If the eligibility requirements have not been met, the staff member will contact the applicant to request more information. If this information cannot be provided, the application will be returned to the applicant until all eligibility requirements can be met.

If the application is complete, but the Board of Directors has additional questions or concerns during the course of their review, the applicant will be contacted for a chance to provide this information or to reapply within one year of the original application at no cost. After one year, there will be a fee of $50 to re-apply.

·    Do I need to begin with the FASHRM designation, or may I initially apply for the DFASHRM designation?

While it is suggested that applicants begin with the FASHRM designation as soon as they qualify, in order to maximize the opportunity for progressive professional development, it is not required. Applicants may apply for the DFASHRM designation whenever the eligibility requirements for that designation can be met.

·    How would I earn the DFASHRM designation, once I have achieved the FASHRM designation?

The following additional requirements need to be met in order to advance from the FASHRM designation to the DFASHRM designation:

     1.) ASHRM membership for a total of ten years (the years do not need to be consecutive);

     2.) Earn a minimum of three designations from the academic/professional designations gride on the application;

     3.) Provide evidence of at least 150 contact hours of risk management (or related) continuing education credit earned within ten years prior to the date of application;

     4.) Possess at least ten years' experience in a position (or positions) with primary job responsibility for activities related to risk management;

     5.) Meet all requirements in the three contribution categories of leadership, lecturing, and publication;

     6.) Submit a $50 fee with evidence demonstrating that all pertinent achievement criteria at any time that the requirements are met;

     7.) The application for advancement will be reviewed and approved or rejected by the ASHRM Board of Directors according to the established designation process.

The CPHRM (Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management) designation meets one of the choices of academic/professional designations as part of the eligibility requirements for the FASHRM/DFASHRM designation. Neither designation is specifically a prerequisite for the other. For more information about the CPHRM designation, visit www.aha.org/certification.

·    Do the modules of the Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Program qualify as a prerequisite for the FASHRM/DFASHRM designation?

Yes, once the applicant has received a Certificate of Completion for the Barton Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management Program, this meets the Category C academic/professional designation eligibility requirement for the FASHRM/DFASHRM designation.

·    How will I meet the leadership requirement?

While all requirements are ultimately subject to approval of the ASHRM Board of Directors, preliminary leadership requirements can be met by submitting at least two examples of risk management-related leadership positions that are not a matter of routine job responsibilities (e.g., organization officer, board member, committee chairperson). Examples of at least two full years in a leadership capacity must be from the past 10 years of application, including documentation of dates of services and activities performed, and provide written verification of title and leadership position from the organizations cited.
