Patient Safety Certificate Program

Attend ASHRM Academy and participate in the Patient Safety Certificate Program, a unique-two part course to help you understand and apply key patient safety concepts to support improved patient care and outcomes. This program was created for risk managers at all levels, with hands-on instruction from the leading patient safety experts in the profession.

Both modules in this program will be offered consecutively at ASHRM Academy 2016. In just four days, you can complete the Patient Safety Certificate Program and return with concepts and tools that can help you make positive change in your organization.

ASHRM Academy 2016
 
ASHRM Academy is the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management’s annual springtime educational program. This four-day retreat combines focused learning and wellness-oriented activities.
 
The 2016 program will be held at the AAA Four Diamond award-winning La Cantera Hill Country Resort, a vacation destination atop one of the highest points in San Antonio. This scenic locale allows risk managers a chance to enjoy a relaxing getaway as well as an engaging educational experience. The resort features gourmet dining, five shimmering pools, an 18-hole golf course and many more great amenities.

Patient Safety Modules
 
ASHRM strongly recommends that you complete these modules in sequence. Upon completion of each module, participants will earn 13 CE Credits and a certificate of completion. Once both modules are successfully completed, you will be eligible to receive the Patient Safety Certificate from ASHRM.
Patient Safety I: Set the Framework
Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19
 
By the end of Part I, you will be able to:
  • Describe the evolution of patient safety
  • Identify the components of a comprehensive patient safety program
  • Recognize the linkage between risk management, quality and patient safety
  • Articulate the prominent patient safety theories
  • Identify the characteristics of a Just Culture
  • Explain how human factors influence patient safety outcomes
  • Recognize the importance of collaboration and effective communication
  • Identify processes for building patient safety into an organization
Patient Safety II: Taking the Lead
Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday, April 21
 
Subject areas include:
  • Identify multiple sources of patient safety data
  • Outline strategies to obtain actionable information from data mining efforts
  • Describe the elements of a successful investigation
  • Professionally respond to staff reactions to adverse events
  • Professionally respond to media and public reactions to adverse events
  • Analyze and critique disclosure skills
  • Discuss strategies for sustaining change
